Emin Pasha

Emin Pasha
(Eduard Schnitzer)
(1840–92)
   African explorer. Born in Silesia, Schnitzer was baptized when young and took the Turkish name of Emin while working as a doctor in Albania. He worked in the Sudan with General Gordon, who made him governor of the Equatorial Province in 1878. He was cut off by the Mahdi rebellion of 1881 until an expedition under the British explorer H.M.Stanley broke through to him. Emin Pasha then entered the German colonial service in Africa, and in 1892 was murdered in the Congo by slave traders.
