Friedlaender, David

Friedlaender, David
(1750–1834)
Leader of Prussian Jewish emancipation. A well-to-do Berlin silk manufacturer, Friedlaender was strongly influenced by Moses MENDELSSOHN, who launched the movement for the emancipation of the German Jews, and their adjustment to Western culture. While rejecting Orthodox Jewish practice, Friedlaender did not seek baptism as many of his contemporaries did. His outlook was based on Mosaic monotheism, which he considered could become common ground between Jews and Protestants.
For several decades before the 1812 reforms in Prussia, Friedlaender led the struggle for civil liberties for the Jews in that country. In 1778 he helped to found a Jewish ‘free school’ in which the pupils were taught the local laws instead of the Talmud. He also remodelled synagogue prayer services, turning them away from the traditional attachment to Jerusalem. His views and activities made him one of the pioneers of the Reform Judaism which was to sweep through German Jewry in the 19 century and would be transplanted to the United States.
