Fromm, Erich
(1900–80)
   American social psychologist. Fromm was born in Frankfurt-am-Main and was educated at Heidelberg University and later at the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute. In 1929 he was a co-founder of the Frankfurt Psychoanalytic Institute and he was an influential member of the Frankfurt Institute of Social Research until he fled to New York in 1938. In 1949 he settled finally in Mexico City.
   Fromm’s books include The Dogma of Christ (1930), Escape from Freedom (1941) and Ye Shall Be as Gods (1966). In the early part of his life, he was concerned with outlining a ‘materialist psychoanalysis’; this included a synthesis of FREUD’S psychoanalytical ideas with MARX’S social theory. Later he achieved notoriety for his public opposition to the Vietnam War and his support of the nuclear disarmament movement. He maintained that human beings have ‘a chance of good’ and his consistent stress on ‘duty and obedience to moral commands’ was clearly drawn from his Jewish heritage.
