Goodhart, Arthur Lehman
(1891–1978)
   US jurist. A nephew of Governor Herbert Lehman, Goodhart achieved high academic distinction at Oxford University, where he was professor of jurisprudence and master of University College - the first American and the first Jew to head an Oxford college. He wrote a number of legal textbooks and edited the prestigious Law Quarterly Review. A staunch Zionist, he defended the legal grounds for Israel’s position after the Six-Day War. As an American citizen, he was given an honorary knighthood in 1948. His son, Sir Philip Goodhart (b. 1925) was a Conservative member of Parliament from 1957–92.
