(b. 1913)
British lawyer and public figure. His massive frame and fuzzy hair (beloved of cartoonists), his lucid mind, imperturbable good sense and his devotion to the arts, made a national figure of London solicitor Arnold Goodman. As chairman of the Arts Council of Great Britain for seven years from 1965, he stimulated every field of the country’s culture, especially the theatre, for which he had a lifelong passion. His skill and integrity as a negotiator were enlisted in the Rhodesian crisis first by the Labour government and then by the Conservative government of 1970. He also served as chairman of the Newspaper Publishers Association.
He takes a keen interest in Israel, especially in its cultural life, and was chairman of the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary performance at the Albert Hall in London in 1973. From 1972–84 he was President of the National Book League, in 1968 he was President of the English National Opera and from 1976–90 he was Master of University College Oxford. Goodman was created a life peer in 1965.
