Gross, Chaim

Gross, Chaim
(b. 1904)
American sculptor. Gross was born in Galicia into a Hasidic Family. After the Cossack invasion of 1916 he fled first to Budapest and later to Vienna where he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule. He settled in the United States in 1921 and continued his artistic training at the Educational Alliance, the Beaux Arts Institute of Design, and the Art Students’ League. Originally Gross carved in wood, but later he turned to modelling and casting in bronze. He is inspired by Judaic themes and has produced works for synagogues and communal institutions. Perhaps his best-known works are the bronze relief panels of the Ten Commandments commissioned for the synagogue at New York’s Kennedy Airport and his statue Mother Praying for the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. Examples of his work are also to be seen in many major art galleries, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
