Hazaz, Chaim
(1898–1973)
   Israel Hebrew writer. Hazaz began his writing career in his native Russia and lived in Constantinople, Paris and Berlin before settling in Palestine in 1931. He is chiefly known for his novels and stories dealing with Jewish life in the European shtetl and in the modern Land of Israel, and is the author of an important play, Be-Ketz ha-Yamin (‘At the End of Days’, 1950), set in Germany at the time of the SHABBETAI ZEVI movement. Many of his stories describe the lives of Yemenite Jews both in the Yemen and in Palestine. After the Six Day War (1967) Hazaz was prominent in the Land of Israel movement that called for retaining all the territory of historic Eretz Israel.
