- (1906–84)US playwright. Lilian Hellman’s plays were marked by brilliant dialogue and stagecraft, and a courageous probing of human though sometimes unsavoury aspects of American life. Her best- known plays were The Children’s Hour (1934) - lesbianism; The Little Foxes (1939) - a decaying Southern family; Watch on the Rhine (1941) - Spanish Civil War; Toys in the Attic (1960) - race and sex in New Orleans, her native city. Her autobiography, An Unfinished Woman, was published in 1969. HENRIQUES, Sir Basil Lucas Quixano 1890–1961. British social worker. Henriques was descended from a Quixano-Henriques family of Kingston, Jamaica, one of whom settled in London at the end of the 18 century. He founded boys’ clubs and the St George’s Jewish Settlement in the East End of London, and was a magistrate and leading authority on the subject of juvenile delinquency.
