(1898–1957)
British cabinet minister. A member of the Sephardi Belisha family (the Hore in his name came from a non- Jewish stepfather), he was elected to the House of Commons in 1923 as a Liberal member. As minister of transport from 1934, he took strong measures to improve road safety, and became a household word through the illuminated ‘Belisha beacons’ he introduced at pedestrian crossings. In 1937 he was made minister of war, and his sweeping reforms provoked resentment in the military establishment tinged with anti-Semitism. These reactions caused him to resign from the War Cabinet in 1940. After serving for a brief period as minister for national insurance, he lost his parliamentary seat in the 1945 election, which swept Winston Churchill out of power. He was given a peerage in 1954.
