Jeremiah Ben-Abba

Jeremiah Ben-Abba
(First half of 4th century)
Palestinian amora. Born in Babylon, Jeremiah studied and lived in the Land of Israel. He became famous for asking curious hypothetical questions concerning fixed rates and measures in halachic problems. On one occasion this was considered an attack on the authority of the sages and he was expelled from the academy. Jeremiah eventually attained an honoured position and had discussions with the leading men of his time. The Babylonian Talmud mentions him and a number of his aggadic interpretations of biblical passages are extant.
