Jerome

Jerome
(342–420)
Early Church Father. Jerome was born of Christian parents in Dalmatia and studied in Rome. He settled in 386 in Bethlehem, as abbot of a monastery. Jerome’s major work is the Latin translation of the Bible from the Hebrew original, known as the Vulgate. It was accepted as the sole official text of the Roman Church. In his biblical commentaries, Jerome made use of Hebrew exegesis and cited Jewish traditions concerning the locations of holy places.
In spite of his Hebrew, Jerome shared the unfavourable attitude to the Jews and the Torah common among churchmen of his time. Dismissing the Pauline belief in the sanctity of the Mosaic Law, Jerome wrote that the Law was God’s deliberate deception of the Jews to lead them to destruction. He put forward the view that on the Second Coming only a remnant of the Jews would be saved, or that all would be finally rejected.
