Jolson, Al (Asa Yoelson)

Jolson, Al (Asa Yoelson)
(1886–1950)
US entertainer. Taken to the US from Russia as a boy, Jolson worked in circuses, vaudeville and minstrel shows, where he developed the eyes-rolling black-faced character that was to be his trademark. His first ‘legitimate’ role came in 1911 in La Belle Paree, and stardom quickly followed in a long line of musicals. In 1927 he was asked to appear in the title role of The Jazz Singer, which contained several musical sequences and a few minutes of dialogue. It was the first talking feature film and a milestone in cinematic history. He followed it with Sonny Boy (1928), Mammy (1930) and Hallelujah, I’m a Bum (1933).
His life story was recalled in two films: The Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again.
