Joshua ben-Levy

Joshua ben-Levy
(early 3rd century)
Palestinian amora. Joshua was a native of Lydda, where he studied and established his school. He took an active part in communal affairs and appeared before the Roman authorities on several occasions. It is said that he saved Lydda from destruction by persuading a fugitive to give himself up to the Romans; but he was rebuked by the Prophet
Elijah for this act and told that he should have given himself up instead. Only by fasting for several days was he forgiven. Joshua was renowned for his saintliness and his belief that the study of the Torah would cure all bodily ills. It is also said of him that his prayers brought the rain that saved the country from drought. Though he is regarded mainly as an aggadist, some of his sayings appear in the Mishnah.
