Judah bar-Ilai

Judah bar-Ilai
(2nd century)
Palestinian tanna. Judah was one of the leading sages after the BAR-KOCHBA revolt. He was born in Usha in Galilee and studied under Tarfon at Lydda and under AKIBA. His attitude to the Romans was less uncompromising than most of his fellow-sages and he acknowledged their building activities in creating roads, bridges and baths. Judah played a leading role in re-establishing the Sanhedrin in Jabneh. He was known for his humility and piety. Though he believed the study of the Torah was man’s most important task, he held that every father had to teach his son a trade. Tannaitic literature contains many of his teachings and whole chapters in the Mishnah and Tosefta are from him.
