Koufax, Sanford (Sandy)
(b. 1935)
   US baseball player. As the star pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Koufax led his club to three National League pennants and two World Series victories. He set several records. On retiring because of arthritis, he became a national broadcaster. It was known and accepted that he would never play on Rosh ha-Shanah or Yom Kippur, even in a crucial World Series game.
