Koussevitzky, Serge
(1874–1951)
   Conductor. In 1925 Russian-born Koussevitzky went to the United States from Paris to become director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which he developed into one of the most distinguished musical groups in the world. He was responsible for the orchestra’s summer concerts at Tanglewood, Massachusetts, and the Berkshire Musical Center there. A year before his death Koussevitzky conducted a series of concerts in Israel with the Philharmonic Orchestra and together with his former pupil Leonard BERNSTEIN directed that orchestra’s first American tour (1950–1).
