Kreitman, Esther

Kreitman, Esther
(1891–1934)
Yiddish writer. Kreitman was born in Bilgoray, Poland; she was descended from a line of rabbis and was the sister of Israel Joshua and Isaac Bashevis SINGER. As a girl she received little education and was not encouraged in her ambitions. She fled to England with her husband, Avraham Kreitman, during World War I. She published two novels (in 1936 and 1944) and one collection of short stories (1949). Only Deborah was translated into English; it was quickly forgotten until reprinted by the feminist publishing house Virago in 1982. It is the story of how a young Jewish woman was determined to overcome the obstacles of her gender and lack of education and it has been widely admired.
