Kreisky, Bruno
(b. 1911)
Son of a well-to-do Viennese merchant, Kreisky was an ardent socialist from the age of fifteen. He served as Foreign Minister from 1959 to 1966, then became leader of the Christian Socialist party and Chancellor when his party again came to power in 1970. In 1973, he was involved in an international controversy when he ordered the closing of a transit camp for Russian Jewish emigrants at Schonau near Vienna, in response to demands made by Arab terrorists who had seized Jewish hostages.
