Layton, Irving

Layton, Irving
(b. 1912)
Canadian poet. Layton was born in Romania, but his family moved to Montreal when he was a baby. He served in the Canadian Army during World War II and subsequently taught at York University, Toronto. He is the author of more than forty volumes of poetry. He has shocked the Jewish community for his attack on social conventions, his espousal of free love, his criticisms of the State of Israel and particularly for his volume entitled For My Brother Jesus (1971). Nonetheless in his memoir, Waiting for the Messiah (1985), he portrays his parents lovingly and accuses the Christian church of preparing the ground for the Holocaust. He also expresses the wish that his two sons should stand up for themselves and join the Israeli Air Force to defend their people.
