Lazard Frères
(19th century)
   French-American banking firm. The brothers, Alexandre, Simon and Elie Lazard, emigrated to the United States from Lorraine, France, in 1847. They settled in New Orleans as partners in a drygoods business. Joining the gold rush to California, they became wealthy by arranging shipments of gold to Europe. Lazard Frères developed into an international banking concern, with branches in New York, Paris and London (as Lazard Brothers), and remained under the control of the family.
