Leeser, Isaac

Leeser, Isaac
(1806–68)
US rabbi. Leeser came to the United States from Germany at the age of eighteen, and five years later was appointed chazan of the Sephardi community in Philadelphia. In the next forty years he pioneered a number of the institutions of American Judaism: the first Hebrew school, rabbinical college, English prayer book and English sermons, and American- Jewish translation of the Bible. With all these innovations, Leeser was nevertheless a traditionalist opposed to the Reform movement, and was the forerunner of the Conservative trend.
