Lehmann, Behrend

Lehmann, Behrend
(1661–1730)
Court financier in Saxony. In 1696 Lehmann was nominated court factor by Frederick Augustus, the elector of Saxony. His task was to provide the finance for the elector’s expensive military ventures. The following year he was appointed resident of Lower Saxony and allowed to settle in Dresden, normally closed to Jews. Whenever possible, he used his influence to improve the position of his fellow-Jews. He held religious services in his home, built a house of study in Halberstadt with royal approval, and financed the printing of the Talmud at Frankfurt. In Jewish tradition Lehmann was remembered as ‘a second Joseph’, the man who sold corn cheaply to the people of Dresden during a harsh winter in 1719–20.
