Levi, Primo
(1919–87)
   Italian scientist and writer. Levi was educated at the University of Turin and was subsequently employed as a chemist. He was arrested in 1943 and sent to Auschwitz where his scientific qualifications enabled him to survive. After liberation, he returned to Turin after a long difficult journey. His books include Se Questo e un Uomo (‘If This is a Man’, 1947) which describes his concentration camp experience, La Tregua (‘The Truce’, 1963), his autobiography Il Sistema Periodico (‘The Periodic Table’, 1975), the novel Se Non Ora, Quando (‘If not Now, When?’, 1982.) and several volumes of short stories. Levi committed suicide in 1987.
