Lévi, Sylvain

Lévi, Sylvain
(1863–1935)
French orientalist. A brilliant scholar and orientalist, Levi became director of the Institute of Indian Studies at the Sorbonne in 1904. He founded the French School of the Far East in Hanoi, and headed the French-Japanese Institute in Tokyo (1926–8).
Professor Levi was a member of the Zionist Commission despatched to Palestine in 1918, and of the Jewish delegation at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. When it appeared before the Council of Ten, he angered the other members by taking an anti-Zionist position. Dr WEIZMANN gained the floor to refute Lévi’s unexpected arguments against a Jewish National Home in Palestine.
