Lewis, Ted (Gershon Mendeloff)

   British boxer. ‘Kid’ Lewis won the British featherweight title when he was only twenty. In 1914 he became European champion and in the following year took the world title from Jack Britton, to whom he lost it in 1919. He also gained the welterweight title of Britain, and the middleweight championship of Britain, the Empire and Europe. LEWISOHN, Ludwig 1882–1955. US writer. Lewisohn was brought to the United States from Germany as a child of eight, and later taught literature at Ohio State University and Brandeis University. He published a number of novels, translations of modern German classics, literary essays and books on Jewish and Zionist topics, and edited Zionist periodicals and anthologies of Jewish writing. The basic theme in his works was the fallacy of American-Jewish assimilation. His autobiography appeared in two volumes, Up Stream (1922.) and Mid-Channel (1929).
