Mané-Katz

Mané-Katz
(Emmanuel Katz, Hebrew: מאנה‏ כץ‏)
(1894–1962)
Painter. Mané-Katz left the Ukraine at the age of nineteen to study in Paris, where he spent most of his working years. In 1917 he returned to his home town to teach art, but post- revolutionary Russia did not suit his temperament and he returned to Paris. He belonged to the group of Jewish painters known as the School of Paris. A prolific painter, in his early work he chose almost exclusively Jewish subjects - chassidic rabbis, talmudic students, Jewish fiddlers, but later he concentrated on Paris scenes and flower pieces. His forms were animated and his colours vivid, with emphasis on red and orange. He died in Israel, leaving his collection to the city of Haifa.
