(1839–1912)
Russian Zionist and Territorialist leader. Born in Lithuania, Mandelstamm became a distinguished ophthalmologist, practising and teaching in Kiev. He was associated with Leo PINSKER and others in the Lovers of Zion movement, that had its centre in Odessa. He attended the First Zionist Congress in Basle in 1897, becoming a supporter and close friend of HERZL. In Herzl’s Altneuland, a fictional description of the future Jewish state, Mandelstamm figures as the president, thinly disguised as Dr Eichenstam.
Mandelstamm was convinced that the only answer to the plight of the Jews in Russia was their mass migration elsewhere. After Herzl’s death he left the Zionist movement and joined Israel ZANGWILL in setting up the Jewish Territorial Association. He was active in the abortive plan to settle Russian Jews in Galveston, Texas.
