Medina, Sir Solomon de
(c. 1650–1730)
   Dutch-English contractor. In 1688 Medina helped to finance and supply William of Orange’s invasion of England, where he settled. In 1700 he was the first Jew to be knighted in England. During the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–14) he was chief army contractor for provisions and transport and supplied the duke of Marlborough with money and intelligence. Medina was an active and generous member of the Sephardi Jewish community in London.
