Melchior, Marcus
(1897–1969)
   Chief rabbi of Denmark. Under Nazi occupation in World War II, the Danish people made heroic efforts to save their six thousand Jews, who had lived in the country for generations in freedom and equality. In October 1940, the Danish underground secretly transported most of the Jews to safety in Sweden. Melchior, a young Danish rabbi, came to serve them there. After the war, he was chief rabbi and the spokesman for the community until his death, when he was succeeded by his son Bent. MELNIKOFF, Avraham 1892–1960. Israeli sculptor. Melnikoff was born in Russia. He studied art in Chicago before settling in Palestine in 1918. He is best known for his monument to Joseph Trumpeldore and his comrades who were killed in Tel Hai. It consists of a lion roaring on a high plinth and was the first Israeli public monument.
