Modigliani, Amedeo

Modigliani, Amedeo
(1884–1920)
Italian-French painter. Modigliani came from a merchant family in Leghorn, Italy, and in 1905 settled in France, where he was associated in the School of Paris with three Jewish artists of Eastern European background - CHAGALL, PASCIN and SOUTINE. Modigliani lived in abject poverty and sickness, exacerbated by drink, drugs and his many affairs. It was only after his death at the age of thirty-six that the art world discovered his talent-and leading museums bid for the hundreds of paintings, thousands of water colours and drawings, and a small number of sculptures.
He was influenced by Cézanne, the early Cubists and African sculpture, but developed a distinctive style, painting elongated portraits and nudes with subtle, curving lines and delicate colour.
