Monash, Sir John
(1865–1931)
   Australian engineer and soldier. Monash was a successful civil engineer in Victoria. In World War I he first became prominent as a brigade commander in the unsuccessful Gallipoli campaign of 1915. After that he served in France and rose rapidly until in 1918, as a lieutenant- general, he led the entire ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand) Corps in the final offensive that broke the German lines. As a lieutenant-general, he was the highest ranking Jew in any modern army. Monash was president of the Australian Zionist Federation (1928). The settlement of Kfar Monash in Israel was named after him.
