Mussolini, Benito

Mussolini, Benito
(1883–1945)
Fascist dictator of Italy. Anti-Semitism was not a part of Mussolini’s form of Fascism. In 1924, shortly after seizing power, he declared: ‘Italy does not know anti-Semitism and we believe that it never will know it’. He met WEIZMANN and considered supporting Zionism as a means of furthering his scheme to turn the Mediterranean into an Italian sea, Mare Nostrum. Even after his alliance with HITLER, Italian Jews were molested far less than in Germany, and anti-Semitic laws promulgated in 1938 were only partially enforced. During the war, however, Mussolini co-operated with Hitler in the deportation of Jews to their death.
