Natronai bar-Hilai

Natronai bar-Hilai
(9th century)
Gaon of Sura, 853–8. Over three hundred of Natronai’s responsa are extant to questions in Hebrew, Arabic and Aramaic. They deal with Torah readings, Talmud difficulties and the liturgy. In one of his responsa he sets forth the hundred benedictions which a Jew is supposed to say each day, and the order of the daily prayer. He was adamant in his opposition to the Karaites (see Anan ben-David), who at that time were setting out their own prayer book, consisting mainly of Bible quotations. He firmly demanded the inclusion of the midrashic quotations in the Passover Haggadah, and branded as a heretic anyone who omitted these parts. Natronai maintained close contact with the communities in Spain.
