Nehrer, André
(1913–88)
   French philosopher and communal leader. Nehrer was born in Obernai, Alsace and worked as a secondary school teacher. His published works include Transcendence et Immanence (1946), a study of Judah Loew ben Bezalel, Moses and the Vocation of the Jewish People (1959), The Prophetic Existence (1969) and The Exile of the Word (1981). In 1948 he became Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of Strasbourg and was immensely influential on a whole generation of Jewish intellectuals. In 1957 he was named one of the Sages of Israel by David BEN-GURION and he settled permanently in Israel in 1967.
