Philip, Herod

Philip, Herod
Tetrarch of the northeastern territories, 4 BC–AD 34. Philip was the son of HEROD THE GREAT and Cleopatra of Jerusalem, and was educated in Rome. He married his niece, SALOME. On the division of Herod’s kingdom after his death, Philip became tetrarch of the area north-east of the Sea of Galilee (the Golan Heights), including Gaulanitis, Batanaea, Trachonitis and Auranitis. These areas had been newly occupied and settled, and most of the inhabitants were non-Jews. Philip added to the town of Caesarea Paneas (the present Banias) and renamed it Caesarea Philippi. He also built the town of Julias just north of the Sea of Galilee, naming it after the daughter of Emperor Augustus. Philip was a quiet and efficient ruler, and the only one of Herod’s sons to die in possession of his allotted territory.
