Raziel, David

Raziel, David
(1910–41)
Irgun Tzvai Leumi commander. Raziel was brought to Palestine from Lithuania as a child of three, and studied at a yeshivah and then at the Hebrew University. He was one of the Haganah members who split away in 1931 to form the Irgun Tzvai Leumi (known as Etzel or the Irgun). By 1938 he was its commander and directed its sabotage and terrorist operations against the British forces. Arrested and jailed in May 1939, he was released after the outbreak of World War II, when the Irgun suspended its anti-British activities. In 1941, at the time of the pro-Axis Rashid Ali revolt in Iraq, Raziel led a small group of his followers on a British intelligence mission to sabotage oil installations at Habbaniya near Baghdad, and was killed in a German air raid. His remains were brought to Israel in 1961, and re-interred on Mount Herzl. The moshav of Ramat Raziel in the Jerusalem corridor is named after him.
