Ribicoff, Abraham A.
(b. 1910)
   US politician. The son of a poor Polish immigrant, Ribicoff established a successful law practice in Hartford, Connecticut, before entering Democratic politics. He was a member of the House of Representatives (1948–52), governor of Connecticut (1954–60), secretary of health, education and welfare in the cabinet of President Kennedy (1960–2), and US senator (from 1962). He gained national status for his balanced and practical approach to reforms in such fields as social welfare, medicare, minority rights and urban needs. He was a champion of Jewish rights in the Soviet Union and elsewhere, and of support for Israel.
