Ricardo, David
(1772–1823)
   English economist. Born into a London Sephardi family, Ricardo broke away from the Jewish faith when he married a Quaker, but continued to work for the removal of Jewish disabilities. He acquired independent means as a stockbroker and devoted himself to the study of economics. He became a member of Parliament in 1819. Ricardo’s work had a lasting effect in the fields of banking, currency, fiscal policy and international trade. His major publication was Principles of Political Economy and Taxation (1817).
