Rose, Max
(1873–1951)
   South African ostrich feather producer. Max Rose was a member of a Lithuanian immigrant family that settled in Oudtshoorn in the Cape Province. He and his brothers became the ‘ostrich feather kings’ of South Africa, till the collapse of that industry in 1914. One of the Rose brothers, Albert (b. 1883), settled in Israel at the age of 81 and made his home in an abandoned house on Mount Zion in Jerusalem a few yards from the armistice line with Jordan. When the Old City was captured in the Six-Day War, the Israel flag hoisted over it was one of Mrs Rose’s bed-sheets, on which she had hurriedly daubed a Magen David.
