Rubenstein, Richard

Rubenstein, Richard
(b. 1924)
American theologian. Rubenstein was educated at the Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati and at the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York where he was ordained rabbi. He is best known for his Death of God theology as expounded in After Auschwitz (1966). In this he argues that after the Holocaust it is no longer possible for Jews to believe in a God who acts on their behalf. Instead God must be perceived as a Holy Nothingness. There is no afterlife. There will be no messiah. Instead Jews must seek their own empowerment through Zionism. Rubenstein was largely rejected by the Jewish community and he became a professor at Florida State University. Subsequently he has had more global interests and in The Cunning of History (1975) he argues that the Holocaust was one of many political population purges which have taken place throughout history.
