Rubin, Reuven

Rubin, Reuven
(1893–1974)
Israel painter. Rubin was born in a Romanian ghetto and at the age of nineteen emigrated to Palestine, enrolled at the Bezalel School of Art in Jerusalem, then went on to study in Paris. He settled in Palestine and in 1922 was a contributor to Jerusalem’s first art exhibition which was held in the Tower of David. He helped to found the Israel Association of Painters and Sculptors. His misty landscapes with olive trees and his dreamy Jerusalem held aloft on dark pines can be seen in many museums round the world. In 1948–50 he was Israel’s first ambassador to Romania. His autobiography, My Life - My Art, was published in 1969. In his eightieth year, Rubin was awarded the 1973 Israel Prize.
