Rubinstein, Helena

Rubinstein, Helena
(1871–1965)
Cosmetics entrepreneur. Helena Rubinstein combined a medical training, an inherited formula and a shrewd business sense to establish herself as one of the world’s greatest cosmetics tycoons.
Born in Poland, she emigrated at the age of twenty to Australia, where she began her career by marketing a cold cream from a family recipe. After building up a successful business, she moved to London in 1894, where she operated her own beauty salon. It thrived, and she soon expanded to other European cities. In 1914 she went to the United States, which became her permanent business headquarters. Her innovations included a waterproof mascara, medicated face creams and the selling technique of home demonstration. She took a keen interest in Israel, established a factory near Nazareth, and donated the Helena Rubinstein pavilion to the Tel Aviv Art Museum.
