Assassin of PETLYURA. Having been involved in the Russian revolution of 1905, Schwarzbard escaped to Paris and earned a living as a watchmaker. He wrote a number of Yiddish poems. He fought with distinction in the French Foreign Legion, and then in the Ukraine with the Red Guards against the Cossack forces commanded by Simon Petlyura, that were massacring the Jews there in a series of brutal pogroms.
