Seligman, Joseph
(1819–1880)
   US banker. Seligman emigrated to New York from Bavaria at the age of eighteen and established a clothing business together with his brothers, who followed him. They set up a branch in San Francisco at the time of the gold rush, and with the profits went into banking in New York. In 1864, during the Civil War, the banking house of J. & W. Seligman and Company was established, and handled the placing of US government securities in Europe. Later the bank became powerful through taking part in the financing of railway construction, the Panama Canal and other ventures.
