Shapira (Shapiro), Chaim Moshe

Shapira (Shapiro), Chaim Moshe
(1902–70)
Israel religious politician. Born in Byelorussia, Shapira settled in Palestine in 1925 and became leader of the Mizrachi religious Zionist party and head of the Aliyah department of the Jewish Agency. A man of moderation, he devoted great efforts to healing the breach between the Haganah and the dissident underground organizations. He also tried in 1948 to bring about the union of all the religious political parties in Israel, and led the National Religious Party until his death. In 1957 he was in danger of his life as the result of a grenade thrown in the Knesset, and took the additional name Chaim (‘life’) in accordance with Orthodox custom. Shapira’s probity and lack of dogmatism earned him a respect throughout the Israel political spectrum that was granted to few other figures in the religious parties.
