Russian-Israeli human rights activist. Sharanski was born in Russia. His ardent campaigns on behalf of the Soviet refuseniks led to his imprisonment in 1978. After his release in 1986, he joined his wife Avital, who had kept his case alive in the public mind, in Israel. He received the Simon Wiesenthal Centre’s annual humanitarian award and his autobiography Fear No Evil was published in 1988.
