Soyer, Raphael

Soyer, Raphael
(1899–1988)
US artist. Soyer arrived in New York in 1912, the son of a Russian immigrant family. He came to the fore as a painter of social protest in the Depression years after 1929, and in the Roosevelt New Deal era that followed. His subjects were drawn from the Jewish and Italian immigrant communities of Lower East Side, New York, and he depicted them with a compassion and skill that made him the recognized dean of American Realist art. His twin brother Moses was also an important painter on similar themes. Both of them were also notable art teachers. Raphael wrote A Painter’s Pilgrimage (1962) and Homage to Thomas Eakins (1966), and Moses was the author of Painting the Human Figure (1964). A younger brother, Isaac (b. 1907), was also a successful painter and teacher.
