Spassky, Boris
(b. 1937)
   Russian chess grand master. Spassky was born in Leningrad of a gentile father and a Jewish mother and became a grand master at the age of eighteen. In 1969 he became world champion by defeating Petrosian, but lost the championship in 1972 to Bobby FISCHER of the United States.
