Timerman, Jacobo

Timerman, Jacobo
(b. 1923)
Argentinian writer. Timerman was born in Russia, but emigrated with his parents to Argentina in 1928. He worked as a journalist and founded the political newspaper La Opinion in 1971. He was well known as an ardent campaigner for human rights and he was arrested in 1977. He was tortured, held in prison without trial and then suffered house arrest for two years, although no charges were ever brought against him. In his book Prisoner Without a Name, Cell Without a Number (1981), he described these experiences and revealed to the outside world both the enormity of the regime and the extent of anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi feeling. Eventually Timerman was expelled from Argentina.
