Beit, Sir Alfred

Beit, Sir Alfred
(1853–1906)
South African financier. Born in Hamburg, Beit went to Amsterdam and studied the diamond trade. He settled in South Africa in 1875 and rapidly acquired a leading position in the diamond fields. In 1888, Beit and Cecil Rhodes formed De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited, and founded the British South Africa Company to administer the Crown territory that was to become known as Rhodesia. Beit played an important role in the development of Rhodesia, second only to Rhodes himself, with whom he was involved in the Jameson raid of 1895. Beit amassed a great fortune and left generous amounts for education both to Hamburg and to Johannesburg, and founded the Beit professorship of colonial history at Oxford.
